Data Access Request Service (DARS)
Data products and services
HSCIC can provide access to a wide range of data products and services [133kb] through DARS and we make a charge [79kb] to cover the costs of managing your application, processing data and providing access.
Please note that the way in which we deliver access to data has radically changed over the past 18 months.
Changes in legislation coupled with growing public concern over the appropriate use of data have led to the need for greater rigour and transparency when dealing with requests for data.
Aligned to this, we are striving to improve the quality of the service we deliver to ensure data access requests are dealt with in a timely, efficient and transparent manner.
As such, a revised cost recovery structure is now in place.
How to access the data
Guidance on each of the five stages (application, approval, access, audit and deletion) is provided through the DARS Process
How are we doing
A dashboard offering analysis of our performance in managing requests for access to data is undergoing review and will be reintroduced shortly. A separate link will follow.
We have also produced benefits case studies describing how some DARS customers have used access to HSCIC data to deliver benefits to the health and social care system.
How does DARS protect data?
Our decisions and actions are bound by law and policies. We will check that there is an appropriate legal basis for us to receive, process and flow data to you. We will also check that you have safeguards in place so that you store and handle the data safely and securely. Each request for data, other than for anonymous data, is evaluated by the Data Access Advisory Group (DAAG). Applications made under Section 251 are overseen by the Confidentiality Advisory Group (CAG), part of the NHS Health Research Authority.
