Summary

The General Pharmaceutical Services in England: 2004-05 to 2013-14 report shows information about community pharmacy contractors (community pharmacies) and appliance contractors in England, and the NHS services they provided, between 2004-05 and 2013-14. It is a National Statistics publication and is the only national level dataset that shows this information. It may be of interest to members of the public, healthcare professionals, policy officials and other stakeholders.

The England level data in this publication covers various time periods between 2004-05 and 2013-14. Data for 2013-14 is also available by Regions and Area Teams (see Appendix 1) and the 2012-13 Primary Care Trust data has been mapped to Area Teams (see Appendix 2). This will allow trends at a local level to be determined following the introduction of new operating structures across the NHS from 1 April 2013.

This publication is in a new format following a consultation undertaken by the Health and Social Care Information (HSCIC) launched with the 2012-13 publication. The NHS reorganisation resulted in changes in commissioning roles from 1 April 2013 resulting in a reduction to data for Essential Services.

The data provided in this publication comes from NHS Prescription Services, a division of NHS Business Services Authority, NHS England Area Teams and NHS Litigation Authority Family Health Services Appeal Unit. The data covers community pharmacies and appliance contractors on the NHS England pharmaceutical list to dispense NHS prescriptions under the NHS (Pharmaceutical Services and Local Pharmaceutical Services) Regulations.

Highlights

  • There were 11,647 community pharmacies in England at 31 March 2014, compared to 11,495 at 31 March 2013, an increase of 152 (1.3 per cent). There has been an increase of 1,911 (19.6 per cent) since 2004-05.

  • Most prescription items are dispensed by community pharmacies. In England in 2013-14 948.2 million items were dispensed by community pharmacies, an increase of 33.9 million (3.7 per cent) from 2012-13 when the figure was 914.3 million. This compares with 83.8 million items dispensed by dispensing practices and 7.5 million by appliance contractors in 2013-14.

  • There were 112 appliance contractors on the pharmaceutical list as at 31 March 2014, all of whom were actively dispensing between 1 April 2013 and 31 March 2014, dispensing 7.5 million items. Since 2004-05 this is a decrease of 22 appliance contractors actively dispensing but an increase of 4.9 million items dispensed.

  • The number of Enhanced Services (ES) commissioned from community pharmacies in 2013-14 was 7,255. Data is not comparable with previous years due to changes in commissioning arrangements and definitions. Local providers and commissioners have also informed HSCIC that the ES data provided is an under reporting of the number of services actually commissioned.
