Summary
29 April 2016: figures relating to NHS vouchers for repairs and replacements for London area team and for England have been corrected. The figures that were originally published omitted some values for London, resulting in under-reported figures for this area team, and for England totals. Where values have been corrected, they have been highlighted both in the report and in the spreadsheet files. Users are advised to make use of these updated files.
This yearly report presents the key findings from the General Ophthalmic Services (GOS) data collection. The objective of GOS, through community opticians' practices, is to provide preventative and corrective eye care for children; people aged 60 and over; people on low incomes; and those suffering from, or pre-disposed to, eye disease. This report presents summary information about GOS activity in England for the financial year 1 April 2014 to 31 March 2015 and a time series from 2005-06 (Annex A presents a time series back to 2002-03).
Highlights
- NHS sight tests fell by approximately 23,000, which represents a 0.2 per cent decrease; the first decrease seen in the lifetime of this publication going back to 2002-03. There were about 23,700 sight tests per 100,000 population.
- The number of NHS optical vouchers decreased by 1.4 per cent (approx. 66,600) from 2013-14 to 2014-15, with approximately 8,600 processed per 100,000 population.
- The maximum potential expenditure from NHS optical vouchers is approximately £200 million.
- There were approximately 527,200 vouchers for repairs and replacements reimbursed during 2014-15.
