Summary

This report details the investment in General Practice and the reimbursement of drugs dispensed in General Practices from 2010/11 to 2014/15. The figures include expenditure relating to dispensing by GP practices, but not the costs of drugs dispensed by high street pharmacies.

The report draws on information obtained from country level financial monitoring reports which are discussed by the Technical Steering Committee (TSC), which is chaired by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) and has representation from the UK Health Departments, NHS Employers, NHS England and the British Medical Association (BMA). Figures are provided for the UK as a whole as well as by individual country.

The figures include some funding - for example for Information Management and Technology, GP practice systems and Out of Hours services - that contributes towards Primary Medical Care investment but does not reach individual General Practices.

This report includes investment in practices operating under APMS and 'Other' (Non-GMS or PCTMS) contracts as well as GMS and PMS practices. This, together with the fact that the investment figures contain some financial flows which do not reach individual General Practices, means that direct comparison cannot be made between total gross earnings in the GP Earnings and Expenses report and total UK investment in General Practice figures.

On 19 November 2015 the Investment in General Practice 2010/11 to 2014/15 England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland: Report.pdf and Investment in General Practice 2010/11 to 2014/15 England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland: Tables.xlsx were replaced to correct a typographical error in the Outturn column of the Supplementary Information section in the Detailed table of Annex 2 which was mistakenly labelled "2013-14 Outturn" rather than "2014-15 Outturn."  All figures in this and all the other tables are correct and the HSCIC apologises for any inconvenience caused by this issue.
