Summary

This is a report on Accident and Emergency (A&E) activity in English NHS hospitals and English NHS-commissioned activity in the independent sector.

This annual publication covers the financial year ending March 2015. It contains final data and replaces the provisional data that are published each month.

The data are taken from the Hospital Episodes Statistics (HES) data warehouse. HES contains records of all admissions, appointments and attendances for patients admitted to NHS hospitals in England.

The HES data used in this publication are called 'attendances', and each A&E attendance relates to a single visit by an individual to A&E.

Where follow up care is require and provided by the A&E department, a second planned attendance is recorded. This publication shows the number of attendances during the period, with a number of breakdowns including by patient's age, gender, diagnosis, treatment and by provider.

The purpose of this publication is to inform and support strategic and policy-led processes for the benefit of patient care. This document will also be of interest to researchers, journalists and members of the public interested in NHS hospital activity in England.

The publication also includes analysis of the A&E HES data compared to the NHS England Situation Reports (SitReps), the official source of A&E activity information.

Update: August 2016 - Correction to Provider Level Analysis (PLA) file.  Please note that an issue was identified with the PLA file whereby data in the supporting tables for the Devon, Cornwall and Scilly Isles Area Team was displayed in the wrong order. This issue affected 16 providers listed under Devon, Cornwall and Scilly Isles a Area Team in tables 1-5 & Tables 7 - 10. Data in the MPDP Sheet and the Output sheet of this file was unaffected.

Highlights

• There were 19.6 million Accident and Emergency (A&E) attendances recorded at major A&E departments, single specialty A&E departments, walk-in centres and minor injury units in England. This represents an increase of 5.6 per cent from 2013-14, however it may be that this rise is at least in part attributable to improved data coverage. Looking solely at major A&E departments ('Type 1'), where data coverage has remained stable, recorded attendances (excluding planned follow-up attendances) have increased by 2.2 per cent from 14.3 million in 2013-14 to 14.6 million in 2014-15.

• Data is incomplete; there were 19.3 million attendances reported in A&E HES (excluding planned follow-up attendances), compared to 22.4 million reported in NHS England's A&E situation reports (Sit Reps) aggregate data for the equivalent period.

• There were 210 providers with attendances recorded in A&E HES compared to 257 providers who have submitted A&E attendances via A&E Sit Reps*. A&E Sit Reps receives data from a number of private providers, walk in centres and minor injury units that do not currently submit data to HES. HES data is complete for major A&E departments**

Figures in the Key Facts have been rounded. Percentage calculations are based on the un-rounded figures.

*This is a count of the number of unique provider codes from each data-set. Please note that some providers submit data at different levels of aggregation to A&E HES and A&E Sit Reps. For example, Peninsula Community Health C.I.C (NLL) submit a single aggregated record to Sit Reps, but have 12 separate hospitals which submit data to A&E HES (NLL04, NLL07, NLL08, NLL09, NLL11, NLL13, NLL14, NLL15, NLL16, NLL17, NLL18, NLL21). Table 3 in the attached data sheet compares provider counts based on the first three digits of the provider code.

**Type 1 - Consultant led A&E, with major resuscitation facilities available 24 hours.
