Admissions, Changes in Status and Detentions under the Mental Health Act Collection (KP90)

ROCR Licence: Applied for
Frequency: Yearly

Background to the collection

The KP90 is used to provide the Department of Health with information about the number of uses made of the Mental Health Act 1983 legislation (except for guardianship cases under sections 7 and 37), as amended by the Mental Health Act 2007, and other legislation. This return provides a source of briefing on the Act and informs policy development in relation to the Act. It also provides input to the process of needs assessment on hospital accommodation requirements.

Data for the KP90 collection is obtained from NHS Trusts and Independent Sector Organisations that provide Mental Health Services and make use of the Mental Health Act 1983 legislation, as amended by the Mental Health Act 2007, and other legislation.

The information obtained from the KP90 collection is used extensively to support one of the top priorities in the Mental Health Strategy, which is part of the National Services Framework and the NHS Plan. It is a complex area that requires continued work to ensure high quality comprehensive services.

Information on the return is published in the statistical bulletin and the detailed booklet called 'In-patients formally detained in hospital under the Mental Health Act 1983, as amended by the Mental Health Act 2007, and other legislation'.
