Population Statistics Database Service

What is the Population Statistics Database Service?

Get access to data on:

  • Estimated population count. You can get national and local authority data from 1991 onwards, new strategic health authorities and Welsh local health boards from 1992 onwards and primary care organisations from 2001 onwards.
  • National-level population projections (up to 25 years ahead), based on 2008 estimates.
  • 2010-based population projections at national and sub-national level are available on request but not through the Population Statistics Database Service (PSD).

The database contains data by:

  • national-level (England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland)
  • health authority (England and Wales)
  • primary care organisations (England and Wales)
  • local authority, regions and districts (England and Wales)
  • year
  • gender
  • single year bandings
  • five year bandings

Much of this data is available in standard tables on the Office for National Statistics website. However, by applying for direct access to the Population Statistics Database, you can also access:

  • Data by single year of age
  • Tailored data extracts, specific to your needs. This is done using the PSD querying tool.
