SHMI review

The SHMI is a complex indicator and there are a range of user and academic views on various aspects of the methodology, and not all experts agree.

The SHMI is subject to continuous evaluation and the methodology is constantly under review. The results of the last SHMI methodological review have been implemented in phases, including several tactical improvements to the methodology as well as some additional breakdowns of the data and presentational improvements.

Further updates to the methodology, including a review of the variables included in the statistical models and updates to the way comorbidities are handled, will be planned by NHS England subject to prioritisation and the availability of sufficient resources.
