Vital Statistics Service


What is the Vital Statistics Service?

We hold raw data sets of vital statistics data, on behalf of the Office for National Statistics (ONS). We can extract, analyse and format this data for you.

  • live and still births
  • fertility rates
  • maternity statistics
  • death registrations
  • cause of death analysis

These statistics are available by specific variables, such as:

  • marital status
  • age group (e.g. infant, perinatal and neonatal)
  • mother's age range
  • birth location
  • birth weight
  • gestation period
  • previous born children

These statistics are available by a choice of geographical areas, in most cases by:

  • national
  • health boundaries e.g. SHA or primary care organisation
  • administrative boundaries e.g. government office region, local authority
  • local authority wards

Who is the service for?

Data can be provided to contacts in the NHS, Department of Health, NHS England and to Local Authorities (Public Health Analysts), providing they have signed the relevant word icon ONS Data Access Agreements [120kb]. Vital statistics data is subject to disclosure control, which means that we will suppress any data that may identify an individual.

There is no charge for this service.
