About this service

NHS Digital Staff Passport is a service that helps employees to move quickly and easily between NHS trusts.

Employees can securely share essential employment information, including employment checks, core skills and occupational health when they move between NHS trusts. They can quickly and securely transfer information, without duplicate form filling, employment checks and repeated training.

Benefits

Benefits of Digital Staff Passport include:
  • faster and easier movement between jobs
  • easy use via smartphone
  • less paperwork
  • less time spent on identity verification
  • personal data is kept secure
  • frees up time for patient care

Who this service is for

The long-term plan is for all NHS staff groups to have the option to use the NHS Digital Staff Passport.

For now, two NHS staff groups are invited to register:

  • temporary movers, who remain employed by their current NHS employer and will work at another NHS trust for an agreed period
  • postgraduate doctors in training, who rotate between trusts as part of their training programme

How this service works

Once an NHS trust is registered with the service, the process is simple.

  1. Register: The employee requests access to the Digital Staff Passport from the trust's recruitment team, or is invited to apply.
  2. Create a digital identity: the employee attends a face-to-face identity check or uses a certified identity app on their smartphone.
  3. ID confirmation: the trust verifies the employee's identity and issues an access key to the Digital Staff Passport.
  4. Credentials: trusts use the Digital Staff Passport to update an employee's record of employment, training history and other information.
  5. Verification and induction: when the staff member has received the necessary credentials, they can complete their verification and start work.
