Text is not SVG - cannot display GP2GP allows patients' electronic health records to be transferred between their old and new GP surgeries. The new GP practice system requests the GP record and the old GP practice system sends it.

GP2GP allows patients' electronic health records to be transferred directly, securely, and quickly between their old and new practices when they change GPs.

GP2GP is part of the Spine secure messaging platform and uses the HL7 V3 message format. It allows GP systems to:

  • request a GP record from the old GP system
  • send a GP record to the new GP system
  • acknowledge receipt of the GP record

Benefits

Benefits of GP2GP include:

  • full electronic health records available for the patient's first and subsequent consultations, which improves continuity of care for ongoing medical conditions
  • no need for patients to provide a detailed account of their previous medical history to their new clinician, as the integrated electronic health record is visible
  • safer prescribing provided by access to the patient's current and past medication and to any recorded allergies and adverse reactions
  • repeat medication details are available for the patient's first medication review with the new GP
  • allows the NHS to preserve the usability of rich data accumulated in patient records

Auto integration

Who this service is for

GP2GP is for GP practices in England. It can only be used when both the sending and receiving practices are in England.

GP2GP does not have a user interface - rather, it is a system-to-system integration that is triggered automatically by the GP system when a patient registers with their new GP.

GP systems access GP2GP via the GP2GP HL7 V3 message integration.

National usage policy

GP2GP is mandated for GP practices in England, as stated in the General Medical Services GP contract.

How this service works

Reports and tools

GP Registrations Data Platform

The GP Registrations Data Platform can be used to view integration times for practices receiving GP2GP transfers.

The platform provides monthly data about the number of transfers your practice received, how many were integrated within 3 days, 8 days and those that were not integrated within 8 days.

This information can be used to help you keep track of your integrations and identify areas to investigate further. Transfers that are not integrated within 8 days trigger the paper process, so avoiding this will help reduce the administrative burden on your practice.

Access the GP registrations data platform.

Submitting management information

We require GP system providers to submit management information to us to support our reporting.

We are in the process of moving from one process to another.

For the old process, see GP2GP Management Information MESH.

For the new process, see GP Registrations Management Information API.

Status, service level and current usage

This service is live and has been in active use since 2005.

GP2GP version 2.2 went live in 2014 (currently used).

It is currently used in all GP practices in England, however it is not used if both the old and new GP practices use TPP SystmOne (there is no need as SystmOne has a single central record store across all GPs).

GP2GP is a silver service, meaning it is operational 24 hours a day, 365 days a year but only supported during business hours (8am to 6pm), Monday to Friday excluding bank holidays.

Roadmap

The items considered for the GP2GP roadmap for 2023 are:

October to December 2023
  • Roll out enhanced management information.
  • Create reports on enhanced management information data.
2024
  • Investigate and remove causes of missing attachments .
  • Investigate and remove causes of clinically significant 'degrades' - issues with mapping old SNOMED codes to new ones when records are transferred between GPs.
  • Create own monitoring and alerting on enhanced management information data.
Date to be confirmed
  • Automatic 'integration' (acceptance) of GP2GP records by the receiving GP system - to replace the current manual process.
